Might of Intrepid
Steaming gracefully on the high seas like a giant whale looking harmless enough, INTREPID was more like a hornet's nest whose hornets were capable of packing enough Sunday-punches to make any would-be aggressor nation think twice before pulling any shenanigans against others.
Crammed into every available space were fighters and bombers. INTREPID bristled with 5-inch anti-aircraft guns, missiles, rockets and high explosive bombs. Her island was a sophisticated array of controls as she proudly patroled the free sea lanes.
On board, her 3000+ officers/men ate, worked and played as one great team. Tons of food & fuel were put away daily.
Ordnancemen readied for action
Mess Deck personnel stowed daily, dozens of eggs; chickens; steaks and pints of milk
Engineroom personnel drove Intrepid's 150,000 horses
Five-Inch Mounts blasted away at air target and bogies
Tons of aircraft loaded with munitions flew off the flight deck
Intrepid's a/c delivered the same firepower/bomb loads previously carried by WWII B-17s
