Bio: Joined the Navy (July ’52), discharged (July ’56). After Bainbridge, MD. (Boot Camp) assigned to the 5th Naval District Headquarters, Norfolk, VA., Office Clerk, (PAMI) Personnel Accounting Machine Installation, IBM machines. Reported to the USS Intrepid (June ’54) as a S/N assigned to X Division. Made PN2 in early ’56. Participated in shake down cruise to Guantanamo Cuba, then to the Mediterranean for 6 months, by way of FL to pick up our Air Groups, then 10 days or so to Gibraltar on to Naples, Barcelona, Greece, Turkey and other places (Made 2 Med Cruises). On 2nd Cruise I was sent home to Norfolk aboard a smaller carrier (got very sea sick I don’t remember seeing or eating anything all the time I was aboard), then spent several days in ‘receiving’ being discharged.

May '54, transferred to the USS Intrepid CVA-11 berthed at Pier 11 at the Norfolk, VA Naval Base for re commissioning...became a plank owner; then to a three month shake down cruise to the Caribbean Sea/Cuba; on our return to Norfolk we embarked on a seven month tour in the Mediterranean Sea with the 6th Fleet, returning to Norfolk in April; discharged and remained in active Reserve until July '60; Intrepid Lifetime Association Member since '82; planning to attend the '09 Reunion in August '09 aboard the Intrepid with my son and his wife. I am excited about this trip since my birthday is August 16th. I was nine years old when the Intrepid was first commission on August 16th, 1943.

Stone, Ray - South Salem, NY, V-3R Division, '43-'45 When I first tried to enlist in the Navy on December 7, '41 at age 16, I was a High School student, had just finished drawing my poster 'BE A US ARMY AVIATION CADET' for contest and delivered it the next day to a post office. On the way out I passed a Navy Recruiting room. I went in stating that "I want to become a Navy Pilot!" I was told to go home back next year, when I was seventeen with a note from my mother. I returned with the note when I turned 17. Boot Camp was at Sampson, Radar School at Virginia Beach, VA and was assigned to the Intrepid's initial crew forming at Newport News.
