Bio: When I reported to Intrepid on Dec. 9, 1965, she was anchored in Gitmo and I was a “wet behind the ears” Fireman Apprentice. When I departed on Sept. 12, 1969, she was tied up in Quonset Point and I was a salty MM2, with three Westpac’s under my belt. That September morning as I rendered my final salute to colors, I reflected on my time in the navy and realized while serving my country, I’d grown into a man!

While aboard I saw six of the seven continents, transited Suez 3 times, steamed around both Capes and crossed the equator four times. I even circumnavigated the globe on my last deployment, stopping in Saint Thomas, Rio, Subic, Sasebo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sidney and Wellington, New Zeeland.

In recognition of our service we were awarded a 7th Fleet Citation in 66 and The Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon in 67 and again in 68. The crew received numerous other accolades and set many fleet records during that time, but the most visible was the Battle E with 3 hash marks we proudly wore on our sleeve. It signified 4 consecutive periods of Intrepid being the most battle ready ship in her class. The first two E’s were awarded to earlier crews and keeping the tradition alive, we added two more.

I was assigned to A Division in the Engineering Department. On my first cruise I worked in the air compressor gang, supplying ships service air and high pressure air to the catapults and arresting gear. Upon return to CONUS, I attended air conditioning and refrigeration school and transferred into the AC&R gang. I worked there for the remainder of my enlistment, with the exception of a 5 month stint in the liquid oxygen plants. The AC&R gang was responsible for all refrigeration and air conditioning aboard ship, including the main reefers. The LOX gang produced oxygen for the pilots and nitrogen for the fuels people. - I’m proud of my service on board Intrepid, it was a defining period in my life.
