  Blackburn, Larry, CAPT, USN Medical Officer, Senior Medical Officer, '65 Born Boston, MA Mar 31 '29; St. Paul's School graduate, Concord, NH; Princeton University, and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in '55. After internship at Ohio State University Hospital, joined the Navy and was designated a Naval Flight Surgeon after completing the basic course at Naval School of Aviation Medicine, NAS Pensacola, FL. CAPT Blackburn was then stationed at NAAS Port Isabel, TX for 18 months and discharged from the Navy after completing his mandatory obligation. After a 9-month civilian hiatus, he rejoined the Navy and was assigned to the Naval Missile Facility Point Arguello, Lompoc, CA as Medical Officer and Flight Surgeon. Dr. Blackburn was a Resident in Aerospace Medicine '62-'65 at the Naval School of Aviation Medicine and at Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, from which he received a Master of Public Health degree, and was Board-certified in Aerospace Medicine in '68. As Senior Medical Officer on the USS Intrepid (CVS-11) in '65, he made 2 Vietnam deployments...became Senior Medical Officer at NAS Key West, FL '67-'69, and Director of the Crew Systems Department at the Naval Air Development Center, Warminster, PA '69-'76. After serving as Chief of the Occupational and Preventive Medicine, at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Philadelphia PA, was discharged as a CAPT (MC) USN in June '78, and now resides in Doylestown, PA.

Before reporting aboard Intrepid, Len got his USNR Commission at O.C.S.(Newport, RI); served one year as a Navy Weapons instructor; aboard Intrepid, served in the Gunnery department. At flight quarters, he was in charge of loading/ unloading planes; served on the USS F.D. Roosevelt (CVA-42); made a Med Cruise in '59 as a reservist with the FDR and Intrepid, operating together. He helped 'ready' Intrepid's Operational Readiness Inspection (ORI); after active duty he spent 6 more years in the reserves; left the Navy as a LT. Len joined the USS Intrepid Association, Inc. around '93 and was extremely pleased to see that Intrepid was saved and moved to NYC; he helped with our Association's Policy Manual; elected to our Board of Directors, and has held all V.P. offices and was Treasurer for about 5 years. Prior to his term as Association President, Len wrote the brochure 'History of Intrepid', which was given to each of the Museum's visitors; ran the very successful 9/11 Memorial Flag Campaign; and initiated the Fisher House Flag Program; served as our National Reunion 2007 Chairman and is now working on our next National Reunion in NYC, scheduled for August '09. His two main objectives are: 'maintain a good relationship with the Museum'/'to get a bigger/better role for FCMs at Museum events'. As Association President, he introduced our successful '08 'Outreach & Expansion Program', responsible for the recent growth of our membership rolls. Len has promised to stay active in the Association.
