Born in Chicago, IL '38, moved to San Leandro, CA'948. Graduated from Bishop O’Dowd High School '56. Joined CA National Guard '56, went to Basic Training in Fort Ord, CA.;  joined the Navy Oct '57, Boot Camp in San Diego, CA. Assigned to USS Hamul (AD-20) as S/N. Served on board USS Toledo (CA-133) '59; Assigned to Flag Allowance, CINCPACFLT (Hawaii) '59-'61. Assigned to Nuclear Power Training Unit, Idaho Falls, Idaho '61-'64. Served on board USS Sperry (AS-12) in San Diego, CA. Served on board USS Hancock (CVA-19), Alameda, CA, with two Vietnam Deployments; Assigned to NROTC Unit, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY until selected for Warrant Officer. Assigned to USS Intrepid (CVS-11) '68-'71, as Personnel Officer/Ship’s Secretary, and Education/Training Officer. Completed third Vietnam Cruise '69. Transferred to Transient Personnel Unit, Great Lakes, IL as Discipline Officer/Brig Officer, and Admin Officer '71-'74. Assigned to USS Enterprise (CVAN-65), '74-'76 as Personnel Officer. Completed two more Vietnam deployments.  Assigned to Nuclear Weapons Training Group, Pacific (NITWITPAC), NAS North Island, CA '76-'77 as Personnel Officer, until retiring in Nov '77 as Chief Ship’s Clerk, W3; Received Navy Unit Commendation (2), Meritorious Unit Commendation (2), Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2), Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Ribbon (2), Vietnam Service Medal (w/8 stars) and National Defense Service Medal; Married 45 yrs to Elaine Erven, raised 5 children. Residing in Pleasanton, CA since '77; Post Navy career, included apprenticeship as Boiler Repair Contractor/Stationary Engineer with Alameda County for 11 years.  Retired  in '95. Served as President of USS HANCOCK Association, and now serving as Co-Chapter Representative, West Coast USS Intrepid Association, Inc.

Mays, Robert (Bob), W-1 Robert Mays, LTJG (Ret), CIC Watch Officer/Sonar Officer
Born in Penn Yan, New York on Jan 20 '37, is the son of Rexford W. Mays and Buelah Trauax Mays who were born in Venango County, Pennslyvania and Penn Yan, New York  respectively; graduated '54 from Clifton Springs Central School of Clifton Springs, New York...enlisted in the United States Navy upon graduation; assignments at sea included USS Gearing '54-'57 during this duty was sent to RD (A) School and became leading Radarman as an RD2.  The USS William R. Rush (DD/DDR-714) '62-'65 as a Chief  Radarman.  The USS Koelsch (DE-1049) nucleus crew Chief Radarman. The USS Intrepid (CVS-11) June '67-June '69 as a OPTECH W-1, CIC Watch Officer and Sonar Officer; Shore-duty tours included; Boot Camp at USNTC Bainbridge, Maryland, Instructor FADTC DamNeck, Virginia, Port Control Office, US Naval Station, Newport, Rhode Island and Electronics Warfare Instructor FAAWTC Damneck, VA.
